Custom Designs by Kauffman, a traveling engraving, carving and 3D printing workshop

A laser, a printer, and whatever you bring him

Carved slab portraits and cutting boards. Cabin signs, house numbers, engraved pistol slides and lighters, articulated dragons, and the one off piece nobody else will take on. The whole shop travels, so send a picture or a rough idea from anywhere and get a proof back before anything gets made.

The bench

Eight things that come off it

Laser engraving, CNC relief carving and 3D printing, all out of one travelling shop. Pick the one closest to what you have in your head and send a picture.

Live Edge Slab Portraits

Live Edge Slab Portraits

A photograph goes in and a wolf, a bear, a bull elk or a bald eagle comes out the other side, carved and burned into a bark edged round of pine. Shading, depth and fur are machine work at four different levels, not paint and not a sticker. These are the pieces people stop at the booth for.

  • Wolves, bears, elk, eagles, big cats
  • Your own photo, made permanent

One Off Commissions

One Off Commissions

A three foot sword off the printer. A tiger the size of your hand. A lighter sleeve with somebody's logo on it. Bring the idea, get a proof back, and it gets made once and not again unless you ask. Three machines in one shop means a job that needs two of them does not get split between two people and two timelines.

  • Props and replicas
  • Business branded pieces

Why him

What you get that a print shop cannot give you

01

You see it before it exists

Send a photo, a logo or a sketch on a napkin. You approve the layout before a machine touches anything, so nothing is a surprise when you open the box.

02

Three machines, one shop

Laser engraving, CNC relief carving and 3D printing on the same bench. A job that needs two of them does not get split between two shops and two timelines.

03

The shop travels, the work ships

Orders come in by photo from anywhere and go back out the same way. Wherever the workshop is parked, local pickup is on the table too.

04

One piece or a whole table

A single gift for a birthday gets the same setup as a run for a team, a business or a market booth. There is no minimum and no upcharge for thinking small.

05

Depth you can feel

A carved relief is cut at real levels, not printed on a sticker and not painted on. Run your thumb across the fur on one and you can feel the picture.

How it works

Nothing gets made before you have seen it

Every piece starts the same way. You send a photo, a logo or a rough idea. A proof comes back showing exactly how it will sit on the wood, the metal or the print bed. You say yes, and only then does anything get cut.

No catalogue stock, no drop shipping, and nothing at the door that you have not already approved.

  • His own photosEvery image on this page is a finished piece he made, shot on his own bench or at his own booth.
  • Made once, by handSet up, run and checked one at a time. Nothing on this page came out of a catalogue.
  • The shop comes with himBased in Marion, WI, and the workshop travels. Orders ship anywhere.

Before you ask

Questions people actually have

Can you engrave a photo?

Yes. The wolf, bear, eagle and elk rounds on this page all started as photographs. Send the highest resolution version you have and it gets converted for the machine.

What can you put a design on?

Wood is the bulk of it: live edge rounds, cutting and charcuterie boards, framed plaques and signs. Metal too, including pistol slides and lighters. On the printing side it is figures, keychains, display stands and one off pieces. If you have something else in mind, ask.

You are mobile. Can you still take my order?

That is the point of it. The whole shop travels, so orders come in by photo or message from anywhere and go back out the same way. Wherever the workshop is parked, local pickup is on the table too.

Where are you based?

Marion, Wisconsin, and the workshop travels from there. That means local pickup and craft shows around Waupaca and Shawano County, and shipping for everybody else. Call or text and he will tell you where the shop is sitting.

Do you do logos and business work?

Yes. Shop logos, business names, family names and address numbers all run clean, whether they get carved, engraved or printed in color.

Is there a minimum order?

No. One piece is a completely normal order. Larger runs for a team, a business or a market booth are welcome too.

How long will my piece take?

It depends on the size of the piece and what is already in the queue. Ask when you send the idea and you will get a straight answer before you commit to anything.

What do you need from me to get started?

A photo or a rough description, the size you are after, and the date you need it by. A proof comes back for you to approve before anything gets cut or printed.

Tell him what you want made

A photo, a rough idea, the size you want and the date you need it by. That is enough to get a proof back, wherever you are.

Three fields

Name, mobile, and where you are. He takes it from there.

Three fields, about fifteen seconds. Rather talk? Call or text instead.
